If we exclude China, Medieval coinage began with the creation of the Islamic dirhem by 'Abd al Malik around 700 AD. In the West this inspired the European penny, in the East, the Jital of the Afghanistan and NW India. Like the penny the jital began life as the regional alternative to the dirhem, and then spread, evolved and debased to produce a great variety of different local types and varieties. This book is a first attempt to collect together all these types in a single volume. 481 types are illustrated using a quick-find format, along with numerous varieties in a further, fuller, listing.
In addition a first attempt is made to explain the monetary history of the period, attempting to integrate the evidence implicit in the coins themselves with the sparce textual sources.
